Cougar Band flutist earns Texas All-State honors

Posted 01/12/2009

Sarah H., a sophomore flute player in the Cougar Band, has earned a position in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Ensembles. She earned the honor by placing third chair at the TMEA Area E auditions, held Saturday, Jan. 10, at Judson High School.

"When the results were posted, I couldn't find my name at first and I got nervous," Sarah said. "Then people started congratulating me, and I finally saw my name listed third. I was really, really happy."

Selection to an All-State ensemble is the highest honor a high school musician can achieve on an individual level in Texas. Sarah, who regards playing music as one of the four most important facets of her life--along with school, church, and family--views her achievement as a reward for many months of intense practice and determination.

"Last year, I missed making All-State by one chair, and it made me more determined," she said. "By coming so close, I knew I had a chance, so I couldn't wait to come back this year."

With Sarah's achievement comes the privilege to participate in the 2009 TMEA All-State Clinic, Convention, and Concerts to be held February 11-14 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in downtown San Antonio. This annual event is one of the most highly regarded music education and performance conventions in the nation.

Congratulations to Sarah and her family.
